Franciscan Healthcare is encouraging anyone with a risk of lung cancer to get tested this November during Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Franciscan Healthcare offers low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans to test for cancer and other health concerns. Insurance providers will often cover the scan if patients meet the eligibility criteria: are aged 50-77, are a current or former smoker in the last 15 years or have at least a 20 pack-year smoking history.

Since 2023, the hospital’s cancer screening program has had a positive impact on patient outcomes. The program has detected seven cases of lung cancer, identified 80 patients with previously unknown pulmonary nodules, diagnosed 79 additional pulmonary conditions, detected one fungal lung infection and revealed 25 incidental findings that required further evaluation.

With 20% of all cancer-related deaths nationwide being lung related, getting checked is vital. Early detection and improved treatment options have increased options for those diagnosed. Since 2018, the average 5-year survival rate for lung cancer went from 18% to 30%.

In the United States, there are expected to be 124,990 lung cancer-related deaths in 2026. The number one cause of lung cancer is nicotine consumption, a preventable cause patients can avoid. The second leading cause is radon exposure. Those exposed can purchase radon mitigation systems or visit the CDC’s website for more information.

Franciscan Healthcare’s screening volume has gone up in recent years, a result of informing the public about available services and encouraging scans. The hospital has also grown from one respiratory therapist to four and has expanded services to include Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters and central line insertion.

The pulmonary team is hoping to raise awareness by encouraging annual physical exams and making patients aware of their care options. Those who get a CT lung screening at Franciscan Healthcare this November will receive a $5 coupon for Red Door Coffee.
