Senior selected for state choir
West Point-Beemer senior Allison Wolken was selected as an alto for the 2026 Nebraska All-State Choir November 18-20.
Each year, thousands of students from schools of all sizes across the state audition for a chance to be part of the ensemble, with only approximately 300 students selected. This is Wolken’s first time auditioning and being selected for the choir.
Conducted by Virginia native Dr. Marques L. A. Garrett, this year’s choir is set to be held at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. The concert will include six songs each with unique composers.
Wolken said though this is her first time performing at the state choir, she’s participated in numerous singing events and competitions. She performed in a children’s all-state choir when she was younger, and she has more recently competed at district music contests, sang in local musicals and performed in honor choirs.
She said her ties to choir began when she was younger and that her family is a musical bunch.
“I’ve probably been singing since I was a toddler,” she added. “I used to play the flute, but I play guitar and stuff. I’m just really excited for this choir because it’s different when you’re singing a small part here, but when you’re in a big choir of people that want to be there and did the audition process to get there, you can hear it sounds different.”
